Fabrication and welding are two essential processes in metalworking. If you are in the industry you’ll know there is a stark difference between the two.

Simply put, fabrication is the whole cycle in which a component or structure goes through. Welding is part of that cycle.

The process of fabrication starts from choosing the material needed for a specific job. It can be mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, or other.

Cutting

The most used fabrication process is cutting. This is quite an intricate process, using technology like CNC lasers, plasma, waterjets, bandsaws etc.

Punching

This process creates holes in a piece of work. Punch presses have specially designed turrets that hit the metal to produce holes in specific locations.

Stamping

Stamping involves creating indentations in metal instead of holes, you can do this using a press or handheld hammer. Letters, images or shapes can be created using stamping.

Welding

Using heat and pressure, welding is the art of adjoining two or more pieces of metal. It’s popular because various pieces of metal can be joined no matter the shape or size. Depending on the project, the most common types of welding include TIG, MIG, MMA, gas welding.
